U.S. private sector employment experienced a strong growth in October, payroll data company Automatic Data Processing, Inc (ADP) reported on Wednesday.

Total nonfarm private employment in the United States increased by 227,000 in October, said the New Jersey-based data company. The reading surpassed market expectations and was the highest since February.

According to the ADP, payrolls in service-providing industries rose 189,000, while goods producers added 38,000 jobs.

The report also showed that large firms added 102,000 workers, while medium companies added 96,000.

"Despite a significant shortage in skilled talent, the labor market continues to grow," said Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute.

"We continue to see larger employers benefit in this environment as they are more apt to provide the competitive wages and strong benefits employees desire," said Yildirmaz.

Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics, said that the job market bounced back strongly last month despite being hit by back-to-back hurricanes.

"Testimonial to the robust employment picture is the broad-based gains in jobs across industries. The only blemish is the struggles small businesses are having filling open job positions," said Zandi.

The ADP report came two days before the crucial monthly employment report released by the U.S. Labor Department, which will include employment data from both private sector and the government.
