Number of U.S. active drilling rigs decreases slightly this week

The number of active drilling rigs in the United States decreased by one to 1,067 this week, or 169 more than that this time last year, showed weekly data released by Baker Hughes on Friday.

The number of land drilling rigs and inland waters rigs remained the same, while the number of offshore drilling rigs decreased by one. And this contributes to this one-rig drop in total.

The number of directional drilling rigs held steady at 73, the number of horizontal drilling rigs grew by two to 929, and the number of vertical drilling rigs fell by three to 65.

The Houston-based oilfield services company reported that the U.S. state of Oklahoma led the gain with increasing by three rigs to 144 rigs, while Texas decreased by four to 533 rigs.

The number of rigs operating in U.S. oil fields fell by one to 874 rigs this week, and more than half of the oil rigs were located in the Permian Basin region of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The number of rigs drilling for gas stayed level at 193 rigs this week.

U.S. oil prices declined on Friday as investors grew concerned over rising global supply and U.S. oil waivers from Iran sanctions.

The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for December delivery dropped 0.55 U.S. dollar to settle at 63.14 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. and the Brent crude for December delivery lost 0.08 dollar to 72.83 dollars a barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange.
