Tokyo stocks opened higher on Wednesday as buying was supported by news that Britain and the European Union have provisionally agreed on a draft Brexit document.

However, myriad hurdles still remain for Britain's exit from the EU from Prime Minister Theresa May's Cabinet, parliament and the British public.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 152.97 points, or 0.70 percent, from Tuesday to 21,963.49.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 10.17 points, or 0.62 percent, at 1,648.62.

Transportation equipment, air transportation, and metal product-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
