Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Wednesday, with the key Nikkei index dropping 1.49 percent to a three-month low on concerns over the eurozone debt situation.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 136.59 points from Tuesday's finish to end at 9,045.06, the lowest mark since Feb. 13. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues contracted 10. 74 points, or 1.38 percent, to 765.83.
The leading decliners included the real estate sectors and mining and insurance shares. The air transport and rubber products sectors were the winners on Wednesday.
Trading volume stood at 1.80 billion shares worth 1,194 billion yen (about 14.96 billion U.S. dollars).
Selling prevailed amid concerns about the eurozone debt situation following European election results. |
