Palestinian delegation to hand letter to Israeli PM on peace talks vision
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-17 17:53

A Palestinian delegation will hand Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a letter summing up the Palestinian vision regarding the resumption of the peace talks on Tuesday.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said the letter is the last attempt to convince Israel to halt settlement activities and recognize the borders of the future Palestinian state.

If Israel neglects the demands, the Palestinians will threaten to take other measures, including renewing their efforts to gain independence through the UN.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad will head the delegation, which will also include chief peace negotiator Saeb Erekat and Yasser Abed Rabbo, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization.

Palestinian officials say the letter will also ask Netanyahu to release the Palestinian prisoners, especially those who have been imprisoned before 1994. Another demand is that Israel respect mutual agreements it reached with the Palestinian National Authority.

However, Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Tuesday that the planned meeting between Netanyahu and Fayyad may not take place, citing disagreements over a transfer of tax revenues Israel collected on behalf of the Palestinians as the reason for calling off the parley.

Earlier, Israeli reports said Netanyahu will ask the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table without any conditions. Their peace talks broke down in 2010, after Israel renewed its settlement activities in the West Bank following the expiration of a 10-month freeze.
