PNA accuses Israel of isolating Palestinian prisoners
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-10 20:58

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Tuesday accused Israel of "isolating" 20 prisoners to force them to break their hunger strike.

"The prisoners were cut from outside communication in their solitary confinement," Ziad Abu Ein, Palestinian deputy minister of prisoners affairs, told Xinhua.

Abu Ein said that the Israeli restrictions aim to "check the supporters' growing solidarity with the hunger strikers and to withhold information about their health conditions."

The hunger strikers are protesting their administrative detention, under which they could be held for years without a trial. Israeli authorities validate such practice by citing secret information they obtained against the detainees, which cannot be revealed in a court.

On Tuesday, lawyers said that a hunger striker decided not to drink water because Israel denied him of lawyer visit. The prisoner, Belal Diab, is an Islamic Jihad member who has been fasting for 43 days.

Meanwhile, a Hamas lawmaker resumed his hunger strike "after Israel Prison Service evaded an agreement" that granted his release, according to activists.

The lawmaker, Ahmad Hajj Ali, suspended his strike on April 2 after nearly two weeks of fasting.

Other protesting detainees include Hana Shalabi, a woman from the West Bank. She was expelled to Gaza earlier this month after 44 days of hunger strike, following a deal struck with Israel that she would stay in Gaza for three years.

On Feb. 21, an Islamic Jihad leader, Khader Adnan, suspended his hunger strike on the 66th day after Israel agreed not to extend or renew his administrative detention that ends in April.

Israel holds about 5,000 Palestinians, 309 of them on administrative detention.
