Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-24 19:47

The European Union ambassador to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst said Tuesday that the EU is willing to help Lebanon's government provide aid to thousands of Syrian refugees residing in the neighboring country, Assafir daily newspaper reported.

In an interview with the daily, Eichhorst said that the EU was studying means to contribute financially to the government's refugee aid program, particularly after Prime Minister Najib Mikati appealed for funding.

She said the EU's involvement also comes after Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour said that Lebanon needs 115 million U.S. dollars to help the refugees.

In its latest report on the status of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said last week that estimated 18,000 people arrived through the Masnaa border crossing over the past two days, while it continues to assist over 30,000 displaced Syrians.

Eichhorst also said that the EU is doing its best to support Lebanon and its stability.
