Supporters of Hezbollah and protesters belonging to the "Lebanese option" party clashed near the Iranian embassy in Beirut on Sunday, leaving one person killed and at least 11 others injured.

The demonstrators were holding a sit-in near the embassy in the Bir Hassan area south of Beirut to protest Hezbollah's participation in the Syrian crisis and fighting along Syrian government forces.

A local security source told Xinhua that both sides used knifes and wooden sticks, with gunshots also being heard.

The army command confirmed in a statement that "a person opened fire at protesters, who arrived at Bir Hassan area to hold a sit- in near the Iranian Embassy."

The army swiftly intervened and dispersed protesters to restore calm in the area.

Head of the "Lebanese Option" party Ahmad Al Asaad issued a statement confirming the death of one of its cadres Hisham Salman.

Protest calls against the participation of Hezbollah in the Syrian crisis have been launched recently, while the March 14 opposition camp is to stage a demonstration in downtown Beirut later in the day.
