Tokyo stocks advanced Tuesday morning despite the latest round of U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, with investors seeking out issues that have been oversold recently.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 248.18 points, or 1.07 percent, from Friday to 23,342.85.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 19.03 points, or 1.10 percent, to 1,747.64.

Insurance, air transportation and iron and steel-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break

Financial markets in Japan were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
