Tokyo stocks gained Thursday morning following Wall Street's overnight rise and the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar after the Democratic Party reclaimed control of the House of Representatives in the U.S. midterm elections.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 423.30 points, or 1.92 percent, from Wednesday to 22,509.10.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 30.71 points, or 1.86 percent, at 1,683.14.

Oil and coal product, mining, and miscellaneous product-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
