Israel to deploy new intelligence-gathering system on border with Lebanon
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-25 20:05

The Israeli military is set to introduce a new system which it says will dramatically enhance its intelligence-gathering capabilities on the volatile border with Lebanon.

A Wednesday report by the Ynet news site said the early warning Multi-Sensor System (MSS) packs some of the most sophisticated technologies currently available, integrating an assortment of electro-optic cameras and radars that enable operators to swiftly produce critical visual and audio intelligence at long ranges.

"This is a system that completely alters the concept of intelligence gathering," Maj. Oshrat, who heads the Combat Intelligence Collection Corps' stationary observation department, told Ynet.

"Officers will receive state-of-the-art data processing for each discovery and will then be able to decide whether to investigate... send fire-range observation or decide that it is routine," she said.

The system is scheduled to enter service in the coming months and will be operated by specially-trained personnel at army outposts along the border, said the report.

The Israel-Lebanon border has remained relatively calm since July 2006, when Hezbollah showered northern Israeli cities and communities with thousands of rockets during 33 days and Israeli air strikes wreaked havoc on Lebanon's civilian infrastructure.

Israeli intelligence agencies assess that Hezbollah has since quadrupled its rocket and missile stocks to some 80,000 projectiles.
